Not that it is the first piece of humblep ie I have eaten during clincals (I am not even a huge pie fan but I'm sure at this point, I am at a bakers dozen FULL PIES) .... believe me, there have been many, MANY days. Today was somehow different though. I was with a student from another university who is on her first rotation but near the end of it. As I am just starting in this rotation, I am looking to her for guidance but also feeling relatively confident about being there. Until my Trauma ICU rotation, surgery had never been on my list of specialities I was considering. There is a running joke with my family that I could never be surgeon because I am too clumsy. Anyways... our preceptor is a General Surgeon who almost exclusively does hernia repairs and lap choles so in my first week there, I tried to learn everything I could about all of theses types of surgeries. Yesterday afternoon, he walks into the room and says, "Tell me about the parathyroid" *instant blank whiteboard in front of my eyes* The other student looks towards me because I am almost done with clinical year but in my head, I am staring straight ahead hoping for her fresh didactic brain to start spurting out information. The preceptor says, "What are you looking at her for?" I thought of two things... laryngeal nerve damage and vitamin D. These two things are at the bottom of the list of things you need to know about the parathyroid glands and Parathyroid hormone. As we discussed the parathyroid, calcium and NOT vitamin D (he literally said to me, "why do you keep talking about vitamin d?") ((PS it does play a roll but VERY little)) Needless to say, I opened up my didactic notes and started reviewing. So enjoy :)
